SpaceX is reportedly planning one of the largest investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, with the company seeking to raise around $40 billion specifically to purchase Nvidia AI chips. The funding plan could include approximately $10 billion in bank loans and another $30 billion in investment-grade debt, according to reports. If completed, the financing would represent an extraordinary commitment to expanding SpaceX’s computing capabilities and could become one of the biggest single AI infrastructure investments ever announced.
The Nvidia chips are expected to play an important role in SpaceX’s growing artificial intelligence and computing ambitions. High-performance AI accelerators are required to train and operate increasingly sophisticated AI models, and large-scale deployments can require enormous amounts of computing power. By securing such a significant supply of Nvidia hardware, SpaceX could potentially build a massive AI computing infrastructure rather than relying entirely on third-party cloud providers.
The move also highlights how SpaceX’s business is expanding beyond its traditional focus on rockets and satellite internet. Through Starlink, SpaceX already operates one of the world’s largest satellite communications networks, while the company continues to invest heavily in spacecraft, launch systems and other technologies. A major AI infrastructure investment could add another important layer to this technology ecosystem.
Financing the purchase primarily through debt would also make the plan particularly notable. Raising approximately $30 billion in investment-grade debt alongside bank financing would give SpaceX substantial capital without requiring the entire amount to come directly from equity investors. However, such a large financing package would also represent a significant financial commitment and would likely depend on investor confidence in SpaceX’s long-term growth and ability to generate sufficient cash flow.
Nvidia stands to be one of the major beneficiaries of the growing demand for AI computing hardware. Technology companies, cloud providers and AI developers are investing billions of dollars in GPUs and related infrastructure as the race to develop increasingly powerful AI systems accelerates. A potential $40 billion SpaceX order would demonstrate just how quickly demand for AI chips is growing.
If the reported financing goes ahead, SpaceX’s Nvidia purchase could become a landmark moment in the AI infrastructure race. It would demonstrate that the competition around artificial intelligence is no longer limited to developing software and AI models, but increasingly involves securing enormous amounts of computing hardware, energy and data-center capacity.
